Timeless Mirrors: A Musical Reflection on Munir Farmanfarmayian
Inspired by the infinite reflections of countless small mirrors, the art of Munir Farmanfarmayian embodies purity, enlightenment, and unity. Her work seamlessly merges mathematical precision with metaphorical depth, bridging the realms of folk and conceptual art.
Drawing from this philosophy, “Timeless Mirrors” is the result of two years of musical exploration, improvisation, and fusion. Kaveh Kateb’s saxophone and the intricate sound patterns composed by Negin Zomorodi transcend time and geography, moving fluidly between the East and West. This musical journey, much like Munir’s art, mirrors experiences and emotions, creating a timeless space.
Munir Farmanfarmayian, one of the most geometric artists of her era, constructed mesmerizing works of art through systematic spatial organization and logical relationships. Similarly, this project employs structured, rotating musical forms—where equal ratios and symmetrical shapes, such as squares and equilateral triangles, resonate within the composition.
Negin Zomorodi, with a background in engineering from the Polytechnic University before transitioning to music and composition, found deep inspiration in Munir’s artistic approach. Just as Munir meticulously pieced together fragments of mirrors, Negin intuitively assembles musical elements, crafting a soundscape that echoes geometric precision and abstract modernism.
Munir’s deep-rooted connection to Iranian traditional and folk art is reflected in “Timeless Mirrors” through the integration of indigenous musical elements. The concept of symmetry, fundamental to mirror work, is embodied in the music through retrograde techniques—where motifs are played forward and backward, creating a reflective and immersive experience.
Like a mirror reflecting infinite perspectives, the improvisation within this project brings forth a sense of unity in multiplicity. Motifs continuously reproduce themselves throughout the piece, much like fragmented reflections merging into one cohesive vision.
For these two musicians, every spontaneous moment was an invitation to explore beyond the boundaries of formal knowledge, embracing the essence of pure creation. Their work, though distinct in form and color, serves as a mirror to timelessness itself.
